THE LAND AS IT IS

THE LAND AS IT IS

I grew up between two worlds — the values of a Boswell Romany family and the quiet, ancient landscapes of rural Shropshire. Those years shaped me more than anything else in my life. They taught me how to see, how to listen, and how to respect the land beneath my feet.

Hodnet Hall Gardens is etched into my memory like a second childhood home. The pools of water there were my first teachers. They showed me stillness, reflection, and the kind of beauty that doesn’t need to shout to be heard. I didn’t know it then, but those pools were training my eye long before I ever picked up a camera.

When I photograph the outdoors now, I don’t chase fantasy or nostalgia. I don’t try to make the land look better than it is. I capture it truthfully — the way the light actually falls, the way the fields actually breathe, the way England actually looks when you stand still long enough to notice.

This comes from my upbringing. My family taught me to stand up for what I believe in, to respect peaceful people of any culture, to work hard, and to think differently. Shropshire taught me to appreciate nature, to find beauty in quiet places, and to see the world with honesty.

My photography is where those two influences meet. It’s cultural preservation and personal preservation at the same time. It’s my way of honouring the land that raised me.

I don’t photograph England as a postcard. I photograph England as it is — because that’s where the real beauty lives.
